Storyline: Assunta Spina (1948) Napoli, gli inizi del secolo. Assunta Spina è una bella popolana, padrona di una stireria ed ha per amante Michele, macellaio, che, in un accesso di gelosia, la sfregia. Viene arrestato e condannato a due anni, nonostante i tentativi della donna di salvarlo, giurando al processo di essere stata colpita da un altra persona. In tribunale, viene avvicinata da un cancelliere che si offre di aiutarla per far restare Michele a Napoli. La donna comprende le reali intenzione dell'uomo e rifiuta, ma pensando alla lontananza del suo amato, accetta. Riesce così ad incontrare >Michele ogni giorno, ma diventa anche l'amante del cancelliere. Una notte, mentre aspetta il cancelliere, che vorrebbe troncare la relazione, torna Michele, appena uscito di prigione. Quando questi scopre la verità, afferra un coltello ed uccide il rivale, dileguandosi. Quando arrivano gli agenti, Assunta dichiara di esser stata lei ad uccidere ed affronta la prigione.
